长达2分多钟的前奏由一支吉他主音，另一支吉他和声，清丽的拨弦后，吉他暂停，手鼓加入，沉闷的鼓点一下一下仿佛敲在心头，片刻，吉他又起，与手鼓一轻一重一高一低似诉说着岁月的悲凉和沧桑。
歌词大意是说经过长途的劳顿，夜里投宿于加州旅店，店里有时尚而堕落的青年男女，所有的住客都是自己心魔的囚徒，你可以在任何时间结账，但你永远不能离去。应该有更复杂的社会现实内涵，大概要了解一下美国70年代的时代背景才体会得到。鼓手兼主唱Don Henley声线沙哑颓废，完美地诠释了疲惫的旅人经过长期漂泊渴望休憩，当发现身处非地后又急于逃离的心态。
尾声的一段solo同样酣畅淋漓，有时候放这首歌就为了听前后两段solo，中间的唱词我都嫌他罗嗦。它也曾N多次地伴着我们在市内街道上兜圈，在高速公路上疾驰，真应了开头那段词：漆黑荒凉的公路上，冷冷风吹我的发……
看过Eagles现场演唱录影，5个生于40年代的老男人在90年代的舞台上演绎70年代的作品，台下男女老少听得如痴如醉，我再一次地深味什么叫做经典，什么叫做不朽。
“you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave(你可以在任何时候结账，但你永不能离去).” 我不知道是不是每个人生命中都有着这样一个地方，或者这样一个人，走开了却未曾远离，离别了却未曾淡忘？
